The Cassiar Street Fire

An arson fire occurred in May of 2006 that resulted in the deaths of 5 of the 6 occupants of a three storey townhouse located on Cassiar St in Vancouver. The fire and police investigation that followed resulted in the conviction and a life sentence to the perpetrator. Jeff Burns, from Vancouver Fire Rescue Services, and Rodger Shepard, from the Vancouver Police Department, were the lead investigators for the case. They will describe the incident and all the essential components that were done at the fire scene that led to a successful conviction. Some of the topics covered will be the assembly of the team, documenting and photographing the scene, floor plans, interviewing, search warrants, protocols and cooperation between public agencies, gathering and recording of evidence, retaining of experts etc.
